Ma Lil depicts the struggles of an African American family during a one hundred year period. The story begins in 1865 with the birth of the main character Lil. It is a story of love, strength, struggle, racism and triumph. Lil finds herself a widow with a young daughter. Her husband was murdered by KKK members. Lil overcomes her fear and loss to raise her family in the face of impossible odds. The story is not told in any chronological order. The story is a collection of the memories of three generations of family members.
